This 110v smart outlet has a small ESP8266 microcontroller that can be reflashed with open source smart home software.
We took one apart and will be flashing it soon to eliminate its cloud dependency. The ESP module has convenient test points for the reflash process.
The hot or live side of the smart outlet is switched with a relay while the neutral is a passthru and the ground doesn’t even connect to the main board.
Note how the 3-prong outlet is upside down from most residential US outlets. Hmm.
It’s also interesting seeing how the circuit board is cut to isolate the high-voltage from low-voltage circuits in such a small space.
